The Amazon Keyword That Looks Good Until You Read the Query

A keyword brainstorm can produce 'insulated bottle for school' in seconds. 1stPage's Brand Analytics connection provides a narrower check when the account has eligible SQP data: was that query observed for the right ASIN and store? A phrase belongs on the worklist only if the product fits it and the report supports the question. Plausibility is not demand.

Use Search Query Performance to decide which ASIN-query pair merits a listing or ad test, without turning an observed query into a demand forecast.

01

Cross out the attractive but wrong phrase first

Start with the item, not the keyword list. A bottle without a leakproof lid might appear relevant to a school query, but the listing cannot promise what the product does not do. Put product-fit decisions beside candidate phrases before looking at volume. A high-volume phrase with the wrong use case is not a missed opportunity; it is a reason to avoid a misleading edit. This negative decision is valuable because it keeps an attractive number from steering copy or spend.

1stPage’s brand_analytics tool can fetch search_keywords_for_asin when the selected account has eligible SQP data. Ask Claude to sort observed queries by a named funnel gap, then reject rows that do not fit the product. That is a shorter path from report to work ticket than copying a keyword brainstorm into a title. It still does not produce a universal search-volume estimate or prove organic rank.

An SQP candidate row needs the literal query, ASIN, Amazon store, report period, and the source field for query volume. Do not silently rename searchQueryVolume as a universal monthly search estimate. Its meaning belongs to the requested report and period. Amazon documents WEEK, MONTH, and QUARTER reporting with valid date boundaries for eligible reports. Brand Registry eligibility and the Brand Analytics SP-API role matter when requesting SQP through the API. A Claude conversation does not grant either one. If there is no authorized SQP report, label a brainstorm as a brainstorm and stop short of a measured opportunity claim.

02

The click gap points to a question, not a fix

For each relevant ASIN-query pair, place query impressions and ASIN impression, click, cart-add, and purchase shares side by side. A weaker click share than impression share may direct attention to the title, main image, price, delivery promise, or match between the query and the actual item. It does not isolate which of those caused the gap. Check the live detail page and inventory state before assigning work to a copywriter. A low purchase share after strong clicks raises a different question about the offer or detail page; it still does not identify a cause on its own.

Each share belongs to its own funnel stage. The denominator for ASIN impression share is reported impressions for the query; the click-share denominator concerns reported clicks, not those same impressions. In a hypothetical row with 12% impression share and 6% click share, the difference does not mean six percentage points of shoppers were lost or that six percent of orders are recoverable. Preserve the field labels and stage counts when they are supplied. If the query set is incomplete, say which query rows were available rather than describing them as the entire search market.

03

Give one row one change

Take a deliberately hypothetical row: an appropriate school bottle has repeated exposure for 'insulated bottle for school' but relatively few query clicks. Inspect the listing first. If a school-use claim is supported and the main image hides the size or lid design, record one proposed change to the presentation. If the item is plainly unsuitable, reject the row even if the report looks tempting. The hypothetical row is not an experiment or a 1stPage customer result; it shows how to turn evidence into an editorial decision.

A useful work ticket records the ASIN, literal query, current image or title state, proposed treatment, start date, pre-change reporting window, and the person responsible for checking stock, price, ads, and promotions. Keep the primary change identifiable. On the next comparable window, read the same query and ASIN fields rather than a blended sales total. A before-and-after difference can justify another look; it cannot establish causal lift when other conditions moved. Do not call a listing edit successful on the strength of one change in total impressions.

04

Do not promote a query report into a rank tracker

An SQP impression is not an organic position. A rank observation depends on query, location, time, and collection method; the SQP funnel does not supply that observation. If a separate rank series exists, identify its method and timestamps, then describe the two sources separately. Purchase share in SQP is also query-specific, not a claim about every sale in a category. These boundaries are important precisely because the rows are useful: a seller can prioritize a credible test without pretending to know competitor revenue or future lift.

Ask Claude for a short rejection-and-test queue: which rows lack product fit, which have a plausible presentation question, which fields are missing, and what one next measurement would settle each question. Have it quote the report period and denominator next to every share. That output is more actionable than twenty invented long-tail phrases. The ticket is ready only when the observed query and product fit justify a measurable test.

Sources and boundaries
